To My Fellow Pastors,

I’m writing to invite you and your ministerial staff to join me for a free seminar luncheon on
Tuesday, January 15, here at Emmanuel Baptist Church.

The title of the seminar is Domestic Abuse: What Every Church Leader Should Know. The
presenter, Mary Avis Pendleton, MDiv, MAC. Mary is a Licensed Professional Counselor and is
highly experienced in the area of domestic abuse. She worked with survivors of domestic abuse
for 8 years at a domestic abuse counseling center in St. Louis (ALIVE) until her retirement two
years ago, and has taught classes on domestic abuse at Covenant Theological Seminary in St.
Louis for the past six years. You’ll enjoy her intensity, passion, breadth of knowledge, and
engaging style of presentation.

Domestic abuse is an area in which every Christian minister must be equipped to respond with
knowledge, compassion, and biblical clarity. Just in recent months, my own denomination (SBC)
has been impacted by examples of high-profile mishandling of domestic abuse cases, some of
them rising to the level of ministry-ending events. I hope you’ll take advantage of this seminar as
an opportunity to begin getting equipped in this crucially sensitive area of ministry.
Lunch is free – Joe’s Barbecue, no less – but you must make a reservation. RSVP by emailing
Walter Vacik at [email protected]. Seating and reservations are limited, so don’t
delay.

We’ll start eating at 11:30 A.M. Mary will begin her presentation shortly after noon, and we’ll
conclude by with a Question and Answer time. I’ll have you out the door by 1:30 P.M., promise!
I look forward to seeing you on January 15!

Grace and peace,

David M. McAlpin, Ph.D., Senior Pastor
